Abstract

George Nakashima's (1905-1990) devoted treatment of materials and the simplicity and restfulness of his furniture and architecture, directed me to place him as a modern vernacular architect who challenged more traditional accounts of mid-century American architectural modernism that situate innovation with functionalism and new materials above and against anything else. In doing so, the thesis ultimately proves that several types of modernisms co-existed in the period immediately before and after the Second World War and interrogates the reasons why some are still a significant component of the architectural history canon while others are not.
