Abstract

This study examines five impressive multi-block woodcut prints of the early sixteenth century as a phenomenon that deserves investigation. How did such elaborate prints come into being, who was involved, what techniques were employed, and what function was intended by the patrons and creators of these extraordinary products? Printmaking has a long-standing tradition of reaching a widespread audience. Large-scale projects were undertaken by several notable artists of the sixteenth century.
